Siemens Rail Systems has secured a contract from Infra.To, the owner of the Turin Underground in Italy, to extend the fully automatic VAL type underground metro by 1.6km.
Following completion, Turin's first underground line will have two new stations, Italia '61 and Bengasi, bringing the total number of stations on the line to 23.
Operations on the extended line are expected to start for revenue service by the end of 2015.
Infra.To said the project's construction work will not disrupt metro services.
Gruppo Torinese Trasporti (GTT) has been operating the fully automatic metro line in the northern Italian city since 2006, while Siemens supplied the rolling stock and automation equipment.
"Turin's first underground line will have two new stations, Italia '61 and Bengasi, bringing the total number of stations on the line to 23."
Under a €37.6m contract, Siemens Rail Systems will work with GTT's Italian partner Tecnimont to provide Val control systems and carry out the required adjustments in the operations control centre.
Siemens has a share of €17.1m in the contract, which also includes the trial integration in the overall system.
Siemens Rail Systems will also be responsible for the certification and authorisation work involved in the commissioning of the line.
VAL, or automatic light-rail vehicle, is a driverless technology, which allows trains to run at more than 30 km/h with a peak speed of 80 km/h to reduce station waiting times to less than one minute.

Singapore and Malaysia have agreed to new build a high-speed rail link by 2020 to improve connectivity between the two countries.
The new rail link between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur is expected to cost between MYR20b ($6.4bn) and MYR30bn ($9.6bn), and should reduce the 315km rail journey between the cities from six hours to around 90 minutes.
It currently takes around six hours by train to cover the 315km distance between the two cities, and four hours by road.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysian Prime Minister Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak said in a joint statement that the project is a strategic development in bilateral relations that will improve the connectivity between Malaysia and Singapore.
"It will facilitate seamless travel between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, enhance business linkages, and bring the peoples of Malaysia and Singapore closer together," the statement said.
Details about the project costs, the route and construction schedule have yet to be revealed.
"The new rail link between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur should reduce the 315km rail journey between the cities from six hours to around 90 minutes."
The countries have made the Iskandar Malaysia Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) responsible for finalising the details and modalities of the high-speed rail link.
Malaysian Prime Minister Mohd Najib Abdul Razak said that the new high-speed rail link would be built by a public-private partnership along with government participation.
"It will be on the basis of private sector funding with the government providing structural support and participation," Razak said.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the project would create a faster travel link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by rail than by air, including waiting time.
The two countries are also planning to build a new rapid transit link between Singapore and the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru.

Bombardier has completed its one-week course on railway applications at La Sapienza University in Rome, Italy, to prepare future engineers for the railway industry.
During the course, Bombardier provided its expertise to students on railway infrastructure, rolling stock, rail control solutions and maintenance services, as well railway operation issues.
The one-week module, called Sharing Our Knowledge, also covered courses related to traction, train control and brake systems, bogies, welding, product safety, homologation and testing.
The training included an overview of existing rolling stock manufacturing processes, as well as project and bid management.
From a group of 180 graduates, 30 students were selected to attend the master's degree course at La Sapienza University based on their academic grades and their field of specialisation, from electrical to mechanical, infrastructure or civil works engineering.
Bombardier chief country representative for Italy Roberto Tazzioli said that the partnerships with universities such as La Sapienza help the company contribute to its growth strategies.
"Bombardier provided its expertise to students on railway infrastructure, rolling stock, rail control solutions and maintenance services, as well railway operation issues."
"Our company has worked together with universities for many years as we strongly believe in the importance of attracting talented young graduates into the rail industry," Tazzioli said.
"High-profile initiatives like this master's degree enable students to gain a first insight into the professional world that awaits them."
Bombardier employs over 200 engineers at its railway control solutions engineering centre in Rome and its Vado Ligure manufacturing site.
In January 2013, Bombardier extended its rail research cooperation with the Technical University of Dresden in Germany for another five years.
The Canadian rail manufacturer also signed an agreement with Thailand's Kasetsart University in January to impart rail engineering education to its students and instructors over the next five years.
