New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB) in Louisiana, US, has signed a deal with GE Transportation to use its software to manage railroad transportation, railcar repair and maintenance.

GE Transportation's Optimization Solutions will provide its RailConnect transportation management system to support NOPB's daily rail operations, increase automation and improve productivity.

The deal also includes the provision of the RailConnect car hire system, which will handle accounting payables to automate car hire processing and offer prompt and accurate reclaims and transfers.

According to the company, the car hire accounting system meets Association of American Railroads requirements and state tax regulations.

NOPB interim general manager John Morrow said: "Migration to GE's system represents a move to the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and integrated rail yard and railcar repair shop management system available."

To manage railcar repair and maintenance, NOPB will also install ExpressYard, which will enable its employees to get freight car inspection information about when and where the work is being carried out.

NOPB will use Business Intelligence to improve operating decisions and help analyse and report operating metrics.

NOPB operates over 123 miles of track, including 37.5miles of main line track, with 11 locomotives and connects with six Class I railroads in addition to providing switching and haulage services.
