The São Paulo Government in Brazil has invited prequalification bids for the construction of a rail link that will connect the city to Guarulhos International Airport.

The winning bidder is set to be selected in early 2013, while construction work on the project is expected to start in March and be completed by the end of 2014.

After completion, the rail line will transport passengers between São Paulo and Guarulhos Airport, which handled 30 million boarding passengers in 2011.

The new rail link will extend São Paulo's existing railway system by 11km and transport an estimated 120,000 passengers a day between intermediate train stations.

The new route will take a diversion from the present Line 12 Sapphire at Engineer Goulart, near the city's north-eastern district of Tatuapé.

São Paulo's new rail link will have two stations, one at Park Cecap in the town of Guarulhos, which will serve the bus terminal and general hospital, and the other one located at the airport.

The project includes the purchase of eight new 172m trainsets at a cost of BRL300m ($146.5m), which will be equipped with additional luggage racks.

The new rail link will help reduce travel times by 20 minutes when compared to the city's existing airport bus service, which takes 55 minutes.
