Alstom has won a €400m contract from the Rideau Transit Group (RTG) consortium to supply 34 light rail vehicles (LRVs) to the Ottawa Light Rapid Transit (OLRT) system in Canada, as well as providing maintenance services for 30 years.

Earlier this month, RTG was selected to design, build, finance and maintain the €1.5bn first line of the OLRT system. Alstom is part of RTG consortium, which also includes ACS Infrastructure Canada, Dragados, SNC-Lavalin, Ellsidon and Veolia.

Alstom said that its new Citadis Spirit tram, which is set to be introduced in the North American market for the first time, is designed as a high-capacity locomotive, which is ideal fir Ottawa.
The new low-floor LRVs can operate in extreme winter conditions and will be capable of travelling at top speeds of 100km/h.

"All LRV components will be produced in the US, while the final assembly will be carried out in Ottawa."

This first phase of the OLRT project involves the construction of a 12.5km light rail line, with work scheduled to start in spring 2013.

The new line will run from Tunney's Pasture Station to Blair Station, including a 2.5km downtown tunnel from Brickhill Street to south of Laurier Avenue, with the remaining section following the city's existing bus rapid transit corridor, Transitway.

The light rail line is expected to transport 10,000 people an hour and will include 13 new stations, three of which will be located in the underground downtown core portion. It is set to open to the public in spring 2018.
