A consortium comprising Bombardier, Thales and Nokia Siemens Networks has secured a €112m contract from Polish rail operator PKP to modernise the signalling of the 350km E65 railway line connecting Warsaw and Gdynia.
The main aim of the re-signalling contract is to meet the standards of the Trans-European transport network connecting the north and south of Europe.
The modernisation will improve safety and increase the capacity of the line, as well as cutting journey times.
After the new signalling system is installed, trains will be able to travel at speedd of up to 200km/h on selected sections.
Under the deal, the design, development and execution of the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 signalling will be carried out by Thales and Bombardier.
The firms will also install standard signalling at eight local control centres and upgrade existing conventional signalling equipment to the ETCS standard.

The deal will see Thales provide the ETCS Level 2 system for dispatching centres in Warsaw and Gdynia.
Thales country director in Poland Pawel Piotrowski said that the new contract will help the company strengthen its position in the Polish railway market.
"We have been involved in the Trans-European network since 2009, including the famous E30 European corridor," Piotrowski said.
As part of the deal, Nokia Siemens Networks will be responsible for installing the global system for mobile communications-railway (GSM-R) on the 35-station line for passenger and freight traffic.
The 500km E65 railway line is part of the pan-European transport corridor VI, connecting the Baltic countries with southern Europe.
