Siemens has secured a £43m contract withCrossrail in London, UK, to provide communications and control systems for the central section of the under-construction railway.

Under the deal, Siemens will be responsible for the design, testing, installation and commissioning of key communications and control systems.

The scope of work also includes installation of CCTV and public address systems at stations, customer information displays, staff and emergency services radio systems, as well as the data networks that will send information to and from the route control centre.

Design and testing of the systems will be carried out at Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire, UK, and the installation is scheduled to start in spring 2015.

Siemens beat competition from Telent Technology Services and Thales Transportation Systems to win the contract.

Transport for London (TfL) invited bids to operate Crossrail services earlier in March 2013, with the first phase of the project scheduled to be opened in May 2015 between Liverpool Street and Shenfield.

"Siemens will be responsible for the design, testing, installation and commissioning of key communications and control systems."

Interested bidders will have to submit expressions of interest to run the line by 30 April 2013, with TfL expecting to appoint the winner by the end of 2014.

The first Crossrail operations, scheduled to start in May 2015, will take over the Greater Anglia stopping services between Liverpool Street and Shenfield, using existing lines.

The main Crossrail services linking Canary Wharf, the City and the West End will open in late 2018, with the full service to Maidenhead scheduled to launch in December 2019.

The entire Crossrail route will pass through 37 stations and run 118km from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, through central London in new twin-bore 21km tunnels to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
