Invensys Rail and Siemens


A consortium comprising Invensys Rail and Siemens plc has been awarded a £50 million contract by Crossrail Limited to deliver the signalling and train control solution for the core Crossrail area and for the integration with Network Rail infrastructure at its fringes.

Crossrail will provide 21 kilometres of new railway under the heart of London in twin-bore tunnels. Up to 24 trains per hour will operate in the core central section area during the peak, with 200 million passengers annually using the Crossrail service.

The consortium will deliver a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) solution and integration with Network Rail's European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). This will enable Crossrail trains to travel on both the new central section and the existing rail network.

Commenting on the contract announcement, William Wilson, Invensys Rail's Vice President, Commercial, said: "Naturally we are delighted to have been awarded this contract by Crossrail. Following our appointment last year to deliver the Thameslink signalling project, we are proud to be at the centre of London's two most prestigious infrastructure programmes, confirming our position as one of the UK's premier signalling suppliers. Key to our successful bid was not only the proven technology that Invensys Rail and Siemens plc will supply, but also our successful track record in delivering projects of this scale and complexity."

Invensys and Siemens plc have a long and successful history of collaboration on significant infrastructure projects which dates back more than a decade and includes partnership work in Puerto Rico, Spain, Algiers and the United States. For the Crossrail programme, Invensys will provide the interlocking and trackside equipment, as well as taking responsibility for the installation and delivery of the programme, while Siemens plc will provide the CBTC and Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) equipment.

Work on the project has already begun, with the companies' mobilisation teams now moving to the detailed design stage. The final commissioning of this six year signalling project is scheduled to take place in 2018.
