The SelTrac system automatically controls train movement on the line and has replaced the previous 40-year-old signalling system.
Under the project, all 106 Northern Line trains have been equipped with the CBTC system, which includes a new display in the cab and a new interface for train operators.
Thales has also instructed train operators on how to use the SelTrac system.
Project managers from both Thales and London Underground are currently working as a joint team on defining the user requirements, as well as the design on the detailed management of installation and testing works.
London Underground programme director for Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines Stuart Harvey said that work on the Northern Line upgrade is progressing well and the team is focusing on completing the programme in 2014.
"The SelTrac system automatically controls train movement on the line and has replaced the previous 40-year-old signalling system."
"Once completed, people using the Northern Line will see huge improvements to reliability and journey times will be reduced by 18%," Harvey said.
Thales UK head of transport business Alistair McPhee said that the joint team, with better access to the key experts on site, is more effective and quicker at resolving technical issues.
"We also see this enhanced customer focus making a big difference in the way the teams interact with those who will use the system, the train operators and control centre staff," McPhee said.
Following completion of the upgrade, the Northern Line will be capable of transporting an additional 11,000 passengers per hour.
The SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control system is expected to be commissioned on the entire line in 2014.
